In order to establish technical specifications for NIMAS a specialized center for Applied Special Technology (CAST) was authorized by the department of Education in 2002. NIMAS is useful in enhancing the availability and quick delivery of the printed educational materials in easily accessible formats for normal people as well for those with reading disabilities in K-12 setting.

NIMAS (National Instructional Materials Accessibility Standard) is a technical standard used by publishers to produce source files (in XML) that may be used to develop multiple specialized formats (such as Braille, DAISY talking books, Large prints or HTML) for students with print disabilities. The NIMAS specification is a subset of the ANSI/NISO Z39.86-2005 standard that is also used as the standard for DAISY 3.0 digital talking books.

I Think Solutions has expertise in managing large NIMAS conversion projects as per the NIMAC compliance. We have helped many publishers in converting their print media and almost all digital formats like word, PDF, InDesign, Quark etc. to XML-based NIMAS files. These files have been validated against the standard and evaluated for their usability with DAISY readers.
